Is Education Really the key in Saint Lucia?

If you've ever tried to get into university... then you'd know how hard it is for an ordinary Saint Lucian.

We are constantly bombarded with those speeches from our so-called leaders, talking about how important education is for the future development of the nation.

If the education is sooo important as we are being told, then I'd like someone to tell me, why our leaders are making it so expensive for us.

In St Lucia the closest thing there is to tertiary level education is the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College.

But that institution can only accommodate a small fraction of the hundreds of secondary school students who leave school ever year.

After that you need to have godmothers and godfathers in high-places or your parents must own housing estates if you are to afford higher education.

Isn't it amazing that in this era of Caribbean integration (of the CSME), St Lucians are being asked to pay much more to attend the University of the West Indies as compared to, for example folks from Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad.

These more development countries have their own tertiary level institutions and while they're asking us to open-up our markets so their goods can enter duty free, they're slapping us in the face by demanding that we pay more to attend their schools.

I hasten to add that I'm in full support of the efforts toward the unification of the Caribbean; however I believe it’s grossly unfair on the part of our regional brothers to charge us higher to attend their schools.
Better yet, I believe that it's long overdue for St Lucia to have its own university... that's what I think our leaders should be working on..... And it was on that basis they were elected to government... to serve the people.....

Well I say to our leaders our people need education........ Starving for it....

Stay Bright Saint Lucia and have a great weekend............
